Last Sunday was hot. Muggy with the potential for the temperature to reach a bajillion degrees.
We didn't want to spend another day working on a list so we piled the kids into the car and hit the road - just like the old days.
It reminded me of our first summer when we moved out of the city - Sheldon was four and Juliana was a baby. We didn't have air conditioning so on the hot days we'd get in the car, crank the air conditioning and drive. We explored neighbouring towns, searched out ice cream, listened to music, and, if we were lucky, the kids slept.
It was kind of like that on Sunday. Except that the kids are older so instead of sleeping there was bickering. :)
Our first stop was a bakery that we've been talking about finding for years. Well we found it and we enjoyed every minute of our visit. Runny butter tarts that started dripping down our fingers on the first bite and that dripped down our hands by the time we shoved the last bite in our mouths. Oh. My. God. Delicious. Sheldon had a donut filled with cream and covered in chocolate that, I swear, was as big as his head. And Juliana had ice cream that she savoured for the next half hour in the car. Honestly, I have never seen anyone that can stretch out the enjoyment of a treat like she can.
Less than an hour later, we stopped at a lunch stop/chip truck for lunch. Fries, chicken fingers, and a milkshake filled our bellies.
The rest of the afternoon was spent with Juliana and the neighbours running through the sprinkler and a nap for Momma.
Simple times. Just like the old days.
